Legislation

The Central Bank of Malta is established by the Central Bank of Malta Act (Cap. 204) (the ‘Act’), and operates under the Act, the Statute of the European System of Central Banks (the ‘ESCB Statute’), as well as the relevant provisions of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

This section contains a summary of the Act, together with links to the Directives and Bye-laws issued under this Act.

The Bank also operates in terms of the legal framework of the European System of Central Banks. Much of this framework is directly applicable and has the force of law in Malta. Further information on this framework may be obtained from the website of the European Central Bank.
