Sovereign Order of Malta (SMOM) Coin Collection

In 1998 the late Grand Master Fra Andrew Bertie generously donated a collection of coins of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, also known as the Sovereign Order of Malta (SMOM), to the Central Bank of Malta. The donation included coinage issued by the SMOM between 1960 and 1999.

In recognition of the close historical ties between the Sovereign Order of Malta and the Republic of Malta His Excellency, the Grand Chancellor Baron Albrecht Boeselager, accepted a request by the Bank for the donation of coinage issued by the Order from 2000 onwards.

The donation was made on Friday, 20 June 2014 by H.E. Umberto Di Capua, Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the Republic of Malta, to Professor Josef Bonnici, Governor of the Central Bank of Malta.

The enhanced collection of coins of the SMOM will be exhibited on a permanent basis at the Bank's Currency Museum.

The Currency Museum is open to the public at no charge during normal office hours.
