Issue of numismatic coin – The Picciolo

On 29 April 2013 the Central Bank of Malta issued a numismatic coin in gold representing the picciolo. The gold coin has a face value of €5.

The picciolo was a small copper coin minted in Malta during the time of the Order of St John. The coin had a diameter of 14 mm and weighed less than 1 gram, and normally depicted the arms of the reigning Grand Master on one side and the eight-pointed cross of the Order of St John on the other side.

The gold numismatic coin was designed by the Royal Dutch Mint and is of proof quality. The obverse shows the emblem of Malta and the year of issue 2013. The reverse features a representation of a picciolo bearing the coat-of-arms of Grand Master Jean de Valette.

The coin is struck in 0.585 gold at the Royal Dutch Mint, has a weight of 0.5 grams and a diameter of 11 mm, while the mintage is limited to 10,000 coins.

The coin may be purchased from the Malta Coins Distribution Centre at the main building of the Central Bank of Malta in Valletta, or by completing the order form which can be downloaded from the Bank’s website.
