Issue of numismatic coin commemorating Grand Master Pinto

On 13 March 2013 the Central Bank of Malta issued a numismatic coin in silver commemorating the Grand Master of the Order of St John, Emmanuel Pinto. The coin has a face value of €10 and is the second product issued by the Bank in its 2013 coin programme.

Emmanuel Pinto was elected Grand Master of the Order of St John in Malta in 1741. During his 32-year rule he commissioned numerous public works, including the warehouses at the Grand Harbour, the Customs House and the completion of the Auberge de Castille.

The coin commemorating this Grand Master was struck at the Royal Belgian Mint. The obverse shows the emblem of Malta and the year of issue 2013. The reverse features a portrait bust of the Grand Master with a map of the Maltese islands. His coat-of-arms surmounted by a royal crown are given prominence in the foreground.

The coin is struck in 0.925 silver, has a weight of 20 grams and a diameter of 38.61 mm. The coin is of proof quality and its mintage is limited to 10,000 coins.

The coin may be purchased from the Malta Coins Distribution Centre at the main building of the Central Bank of Malta in Valletta, or by completing the order form which can be downloaded from the Bank’s website.
