Philomena Meli was appointed as Member of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Malta for a period of five years with effect from 23 January 2012, a post she already occupied during the period 2003-2007. She holds a B.A. (Hons) Degree in Economics from the University of Malta and has been working in the field of international trade matters since the early eighties.
Ms Meli was first employed in the Research Division of the Central Bank of Malta, where she was instrumental in setting up a Trade Documentation Unit for exporters in 1980. After a seventeen year career in the then Malta External Trade Corporation (METCO), she took up a post in the Ministry of Finance in 2004 as a consultant on trade policy in the International Economic Relations Directorate of the Economic Policy Department. Thereafter she moved on to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a consultant in the Directorate General European and Economic Affairs. Between 2010 and 2015, she served as Head, External Institutional Affairs and Trade Policy Unit at Malta Enterprise where presently, she is engaged as an institutional networks consultant for the Euromediterranean region. In September 2015, Ms Meli was appointed Malta’s Ambassador (Non-resident) to Algeria.
