Which entities in Malta can issue a credit score?

A credit score is a measure of creditworthiness derived from credit information.  In Malta such credit scores are issued by licenced Credit Reference Agencies (CRA). Only such licensed institutions can make use of the Central Bank of Malta's Central Credit Register (CCR). CRAs issue credit score aimed at assisting creditors to assess the creditworthiness of their existing and prospective counterparties. Besides the CCR data, a credit score would also make use of other relevant data, various financial and administrative sources. However, the use of the CBM CCR, given that its data is sourced directly from the Banks, adds robustness and hence more comfort to the creditors requesting such evaluations.

Only the CRAs licenced by the Commerce Department's Trade Licensing Unit in terms of Regulation 47A of the Trading Licences Regulations can issue credit scores. The same licencing obligations apply to entities using similar terms to a 'credit score' which suggest a resemblance to a CRA's business model.

Although there are entities providing similar credit evaluation services, these entities are not licensed CRAs. Hence clients are encouraged to consult with the list of licensed CRA before deciding on which services to use.
