The balcony is a characteristic feature of the Maltese streetscape. The first open balconies built entirely from stone appeared locally in medieval times. Many architectural historians believe that the first closed balconies were simply an addition to the stone parapet of the open balcony. The stone work later gave way to wooden panelling and evolved into the closed timber balcony of today. The closed timber balcony is believed to have originated in Valletta and its popularity spread from the city to the outlying villages during the 18th century.
