SPACE - Study on the Payment Attitudes of Consumers in the Euro area
As a follow-up to the Study on the Payment Attitudes of Consumers in the Euro area (SPACE) published in December 2020, a new survey for the next study, SPACE II, will take place between September 2021 and May 2022.
The European Central Bank has prepared comprehensive information about the procedures to be followed during the upcoming survey - being conducted by Kantar Public - at the SPACE webpage. Kantar Public will contact over 40,000 people in the euro area to participate in the study via online and phone interviews. Participants will not be asked to provide sensitive information such as credit card numbers, and their personal data will not be shared with third parties.
SPACE looks at how consumers use cash and non-cash means of payment in euro area countries. The study covers purchases and payments made by individuals at the physical point of sale, person-to-person and remotely (for example when shopping online, ordering by phone or paying bills).
SPACE also explores the factors influencing people's payment attitudes and behaviour, such as their own payment preferences and the access they have to each means of payment. The study helps the Eurosystem to understand consumer demand and evolving market trends and facilitates the implementation of the Eurosystem's cash and payment strategies.
