Ms Rita Schembri

Ms Rita Schembri occupies the role of Deputy Governor responsible for monetary policy at the Central Bank of Malta.

She joined the Bank in 1999 as a trainee research economist in the Governor's Office, later External Relations Office. In this capacity, she supported senior management on Malta's representation in international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Over the first half of her career, Ms Schembri contributed to the Bank's engagement with the Eurosystem and external stakeholders on issues related to euro adoption and the economic convergence process. During this time, she also helped with the co-ordination of internal briefings held ahead of the European Central Bank (ECB) Governing Council and General Council meetings.

In 2011, she was appointed Manager in the Economic Analysis Department, and in 2018, she moved into the role of Head within the same department. In these roles, she directed the analysis of economic developments in Malta and in the euro area for the Bank's main economic publications and coordinated economic projection exercises, including those for public finance. She directed the Business Dialogue exercise and until recently was responsible for the Household Finance and Consumption Survey. In 2017, Ms Schembri also assumed new responsibilities related to government finance statistics and general economic statistics.

For several years, she was one of the Bank's representatives on the ECB's Monetary Policy Committee and, prior to that, some of its substructures, notably those responsible for fiscal and macroeconomic projections.

Meanwhile, at different intervals, she has represented the Bank on local fora, including the Malta Statistics Authority and the Building Industry Consultative Council.  She is also the Bank's alternate member on the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development.

Ms Schembri holds a B.Com. (Hons) degree in Economics from the University of Malta and a Master of Science degree in Financial Economics from the Centre for Financial and Management Studies, as part of SOAS, University of London, UK.
