Central Bank of Malta Public Finance Workshop

On 5 July 2019, the Central Bank of Malta organised a workshop on public finance issues, which followed a meeting of the European Central Bank (ECB)'s Working Group on Public Finance on 4 July.

The workshop was addressed by Mr Alexander Demarco, the Bank's Deputy Governor responsible for monetary policy and by Mr John Caruana, Head Monetary Policy & Operations and Eurosystem Relations Department.

It was organised into four sessions: model-based analysis of fiscal policy, interactions between sovereign debt and the private sector, issues in forecasting and debt sustainability, and the impact of fiscal policy on economic growth and inequality.

In total, the sessions featured nine presentations covering research produced by economists working at the Central Bank of Malta, the European Central Bank, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the European Commission and a number of European national central banks and universities.

Discussants hailed from the Banco de España, the Central Bank of Ireland, Malta's Ministry for Finance and Queen Mary University of London.

The workshop was attended by delegates from European System of Central Banks, the European Commission, the National Statistics Office, the Ministry for Finance and the Malta Fiscal Advisory Council.

The workshop agenda contains links to selected presentations and speeches delivered during the conference, as well as the speakers' biographical notes.
