Presentation of funds to the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation

The Central Bank of Malta has donated €82,000 to the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation. The donation presented to the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, by the Governor, Dr Mario Vella, represents the profit made from the sale of coin cards of the €2 commemorative coins with the theme 'Solidarity through Love'.

The coin is the first of a series of five coins being issued by the Central Bank of Malta under a programme entitled 'From Children in Solidarity'. This programme is an initiative taken by the Central Bank of Malta and the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation, supported by the Ministry for Education and Employment.

The coin was the outcome of a competition that was open to all secondary school students, with the winning design being selected through a voting process, which in itself was a way of promoting democratic values and a sense of responsible citizenship among young students. The themes for the 2017 and 2018 coin design competitions are 'Peace' and 'National Heritage', respectively.
