The Archetypal Paintings of Victor Pasmore - Lecture by Dr Louis Laganà

In this public talk, Dr Louis Laganà (University of Malta) shall be exploring Maltese ancient history and prehistoric art as potential sources of influence along the creative journey of the British artist, Victor Pasmore (1908-1998). Here, they shall be considered in light of their possible contribution to the metamorphosis of Pasmore's imagination and creativity towards the expression of archetypal symbols of the unconscious.

The underlying premise of this talk is that the unconscious plays a very important role in the artist's creative process. Through the course of Victor Pasmore's artistic journey, we shall encounter some of the technical devices of the unconscious that find expression in his art forms and dynamic tendencies.

Moreover, Pasmore's early works and his radical change to abstraction shall be discussed, especially where the symbolical aspect of the spiral, the mandala, and other symbolic icons are particularly prevalent: as markers of a state of mind, which reflect on his artistic life, nature and psyche.

The lecture is free of charge, however, reservation is highly encouraged given that the space is very limited. Entrance to the gallery is through Ġlormu Cassar Street (the road leading up to Castille Square).

The Tuesday Talks series is managed by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Malta, the Victor Pasmore Foundation and Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum, and is endorsed by the Valletta 2018 Foundation.
