25th Anniversary of Malta's Independence
On 21 September 1964 Malta became an Independent Nation. Malta's Independence opened new horizons for the island. As a result the country was able to take its rightful place in all international fora, including the United Nations. Malta was also able to expand its economy with the resulting improvements in the general living standards of its people. To commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Independence, the Central Bank of Malta issued a set of two coins, one in Gold and the other in Silver. Both coins bear the portrait of Dr Giorgio Borg Olivier, Prime Minister of the day.
