Wignacourt was a 436-ton bark that was built in 1844. The ship was owned by the Valletta merchants Giuseppe Garcin, Antonio Borg and Salvatore Isouard. Wignacourt was one of the fastest Maltese sailing ships at the time and was employed on various Mediterranean and Black Sea trade routes.
