Door knockers served a practical purpose, especially before the advent of the mechanical and electrical bell. Door knockers also acquired a decorative purpose, which explains why they still remain popular. Buildings throughout the Maltese Islands, especially in Mdina and Valletta, boast of some exceptionally fine examples of door knockers. These highly decorated and intricate works of art sport numerous motifs and come in all shapes and sizes. Very often, they reflect the personality and status of the house owner.
