The Maltese freshwater crab (qabru) is endemic to certain areas within the Maltese Islands and is found in Baħrija, Mtaħleb, San Martin and Lunzjata Valley (Gozo), where running water is present all year round. This subspecies of crab is very rare and grows to 7-8cm. It lives near pools and springs, and hides under stones in the water, among vegetation, or by retreating into burrows, which it excavates in the mud or clay. It usually feeds on smaller animals, including snails.
