The gardjola refers to a stone sentry box built on top of the salient angle of a bastion. The gardjola enabled sentries to command a good view of the foot of the bastion; through its loopholes the sentries could open fire without exposing themselves to enemy fire. The gardjola at Senglea Point, now considered as one of the landmarks of the Grand Harbour, was demolished during the Second World War not to hamper the field of fire of the defending guns. It was rebuilt after the conflict.
