The bronze statue of Neptune formed part of a fountain that was erected in 1615 by Grand Master Adolf de Wignacourt to commemorate the completion of the aqueduct. It was originally located at Lascaris Wharf and formed part of the old fish market. A small stone cannon at the base of this fountain supplied water to small sea craft within the little inlet below the Neptune fountain, known at the time as Porto Pidocchio. The statue was transferred from the harbour area to the Palace courtyard in 1858 at the time of Governor Gaspard Le Marchant.
